A Study of Occupational Fatigue Upon Drivers(taxis, buses, & private cars).

Abstract
The author has investigated the occupational effects of driving upon the general health of drivers with emphasis on the degree of fatigue brought about. The study invited the participation of 99 taxi drivers, 42 bus drivers, and 41 private car drivers, or a total of 182 drivers,
For a period of two weeks, from- August 1 to August 14,1974 subjective complaints of physical, mental, and neurosensory origin as consequences of their. driving were recorded. Objective tests for visual range of accommodation making use of the Prince-Rule were performed before and after a day¢¥s driving to detect differences. This study is modeled after the suggestions of the literature, "Methods for Study_ of the Levels of Fatigue" published by the Japan Institue of Labor Research.
The following summarize the findings of the study.
1. According to the specified type of vehicle driven, taxi drivers had the highest rate of subjective fatigue complaints, followed by bus drivers and private car drivers the least. Symptom-wise, 55.6% of taxi drivers felt "tired out" compared to 64.3% of bus drivers after a day¢¥s work. 35.4% of taxi drivers versus 47.6% of bus drivers complained of "sensation of heaviness of the lower extremities. " Eyestrain was experienced by 70.7% of taxi drivers and 76.2% of bus drivers.
2. Statistics show a significant difference between the level of physical fatigue of taxi drivers and bus drivers Although no great measurable difference can be found in the levels of mental and neurosensory fatigue, there is a tendency for taxi drivers to experience greater fatigue than private car drivers.
3. The rate of fatigue in relation to the number of driving service years and to the number of sleeping hours daily reveal no great information in so far as statistical value is concerned. However, longer hours of sleep increases the threshold of fatigue. ,,
4. Tests for range of accomodation performed before and after a day of driving service reveal difference of mean .1.38 diopter for the taxi drivers, 0. 92 diopter for the bus drivers, and 0. 31 diopter for the private car drivers.
